Welcoming the Children

September 9, 2017

Over the Labor Day weekend, my wife Kathy and I helped our oldest son, our daughter-in-law and five of our grandchildren move into their new house in Valpo. As I was loading our vans full of boxes, pictures, bed frames and many other items, I came to the realization that a new phase or chapter was beginning for them and for us. It was a blessing having them live with us while they searched for a home, but now they will enjoy the benefit of more space and a place they can call their own. Additionally, as they turn the page and begin a new journey, they will find a sense of confidence in developing the peace and comforts of their new home.

This Sunday, September 10, First Presbyterian will be turning the page and beginning a new chapter by introducing a new program for children called "Kids of the Kingdom". This new program for children ages 3 through 5th grade will take place during both the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services.  In "Kids of the Kingdom", children will enjoy a variety of activities, including songs, a Bible story lesson, team building games and crafts.

As First Presbyterian provides the children of the church with fresh and exciting opportunities to learn about God, the entire congregation can share in the spiritual growth of a new era of teaching and learning.

"Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me, welcomes not me but the one who sent me."

Mark 9:37

As Jesus Christ serves as our Greatest Teacher, we are reminded that the many volunteers who will teach our children in "Kids of the Kingdom" are a true blessing of our Lord and Savior. The happiness and joy that our children express upon learning about God's kingdom are a divine reflection of the energy and love of Christ.

Whether we are adults who have been blessed with decades of learning, younger adults, teens or young children, we all unite together in welcoming each other in an eternal chapter as one with Jesus - one with the Lord.  The reality is that we are ALL "Kids of the Kingdom" and our learning, our teaching, our support and our grace are cooperative efforts with Jesus Christ that continues with a kickoff this Sunday at First Presbyterian in Valpo.

We are truly blessed!

God Bless,

Bill Rogers
McCormick Theological Seminary student

"I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth."
