Waiting for daffodils

April 29, 2018

For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.

 Psalm 62:1

Finally. The daffodils have dared to open their faces to the sun.

Finally. The tree outside my office window has burst into bloom.

Finally. Green buds are appearing on last year's hydrangea canes.

Finally. This year has been a slog. For those like me, not used to long winters, and for those who have spent their whole lives here, the relief is palpable. Spoken. The hope of warmer temperatures is turning into reality. Finally.

Waiting is hard. It always has been. The psalmist, many times over, uses the word (or one of its variations) 'wait' in Psalms 25, 27, 31, 33, 37, 38, 39, 40, 59, 62, 69... you get my drift. Waiting is hard for us humans, and it always has been.

But. There is good news.

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

Psalm 62:2

When we know the Lord, when we read scripture, when we participate in the body of Christ, we know what is beyond the waiting. I shall never be shaken. The Lord has me in the palm of his hand. Regardless of the winds that blow, no matter what the temperature gauge reads; regardless of who sits in power, or what the doctor says; no matter the circumstances which I find myself in, I shall never be shaken.

The seasons do come and go, sometimes more predictably than others. Our bodies are human, and some work better than others. There will always be people in power, some we prefer, and some we don't.

But in the final analysis, what is most important is not the season, nor the health of our bodies, nor the name of those who sit in high places, but rather who we put our trust in, who is our rock, who is the one upon which we can ultimately rely.

For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress;

I shall not be shaken.  On God rests my deliverance and my honor;

my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him;

God is a refuge for us.

Psalm 62:5-8

I continue serving in Christ, confident, and waiting....
